Holistic Dog Treat Recipes

People can put a lot of thought into what they are putting into their bodies for the sake of their health. But what about their pets? Holistic dog treats are a simple fix for this. Like any other holistic treatment or feeding regimen, holistic dog treats take care of a dog's health in every aspect---physically, mentally and otherwise. Luckily, holistic dog treats are pretty easy to make at home, and they can do wonders for your pet's health and attitude.

  1. Holistic Dog Treats for Flea-Prone Canines

    • If fleas seem to pester your dog to no end, consider these holistic treats for flea-ridden dogs.

Mix in a bowl 1 cup of water, ¼ cup of vegetable oil, 1 ½ cups of wheat flour, ¼ cup of brewer's yeast, 1 ½ teaspoons of dry yeast, 2 tablespoons of chicken bouillon, ¼ cup of unbleached flour, ¼ cup of dried vegetables and ½ a cup of corn meal. Mix until the mixture begins to turn into dough.

When the dough is finished, divide it into three sheets and roll it out onto a cutting board. Be sure to coat your rolling pin with flour to prevent sticking. Use a cookie cutter of your choice to cut out whatever shapes you deem best. Then, spray a cookie sheet with oil and bake the treats for an hour at 275 degrees. Take them out and leave them out overnight to dry. In the morning, you will have flea-repelling dog treats!

Holistic Dog Treats for Gas-Prone Canines

    • If your dog is prone to gas, chances are that you need him to have these treats as much as he will want to eat them.

Mix ½ cup of corn meal, a cup of unbleached flour, 1 ½ cups of whole wheat flour, 1 ½ tablespoons of dry yeast, 2 tablespoons of soaked (soft) fenugreek seeds, a tablespoon of crushed anise seeds, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, a tablespoon of turmeric and a cup of water into a bowl.

Mix it all together until the mixture takes on the consistency of dough. Roll it out onto a cutting board coated with flour, and use cookie cutters to create the shapes of your choice. Cook the treats at 275 degrees for one hour and leave them out overnight to dry. In the morning, they should be ready to bust some gas.

    Breakfast Bars for Dogs

    • If you want to start your dog's day off right, consider these breakfast bars for a nutritious meal on the go.

Combine 4 cups of oats, a cup of buckwheat, a cup of whole wheat flour, a cup of boiling water, 8 tablespoons of safflower oil, 8 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses, two tablespoons of raw honey, 4 eggs, and a cup of raisins together in a bowl. Mix to create a dough.

Roll the dough out onto a baking sheet and cook at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Use a scorer to cut the bars, and set them on a wire rack to cool. For crispy bars, leave them out overnight to dry.
