When a small mammal, such as a dog or a cat, has swallowed something they are not supposed to swallow, you might need to induce vomiting to make sure the substance gets out of his body. If instructed to do so, there are steps to follow to make sure you do it correctly.
Things You'll Need
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Tablespoon
- Small dish
- Peanut butter, tuna fish or other food your animal likes
Instructions
Call the vet. Tell the vet what your pet has eaten and ask if you should induce vomiting.
Place the animal in a room that has a floor that is easy to clean, such as your kitchen or bathroom. Gather the materials you need and bring them in the room with you.
Pour a small amount of hydrogen peroxide into a container. You shouldn't need more than a tablespoon. For dogs, add a dollop of peanut butter. For cats, add a spoonful of tuna fish. Place the container on the floor in front of the animal.
Watch carefully while the animal licks the food and ingests a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. After the animal has ingested the hydrogen peroxide, take away the rest of the food you have put down.
Wait for 10 minutes.
Repeat the steps after 20 minutes if the animal has not vomited. Only try two or three times, however. If hydrogen peroxide doesn't work within that time frame, abandon the effort and call your veterinarian.
