Canine Poisoning Symptoms

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, thousands of pets die every year from accidental poisoning. Dogs are most commonly poisoned by human medicines, improper foods and household cleaning products.

  1. Lethargy

    • Dogs might become lethargic, unresponsive or unusually fatigued after consuming a poison.

    Seizures

    • Because of central nervous system damage, some poisoned dogs might have seizures that involve jerking, involuntary vocalizations or full-body convulsions.

    Vomiting

    • Many poisons will cause dogs to vomit. The dog might vomit once or several times, and there might be visible traces of blood or bile.

    Incontinence

    • A dog might lose control of its bladder and/or bowels after ingesting a toxin. It might urinate or defecate involuntarily, and the excrement might contain blood or mucus.

    Unusual Behavior

    • Some dogs might display behaviors that are bizarre or out of character after ingesting a poison. These might include whining, baying, aggression or clinginess.
