Herbal Therapy for Canine Glaucoma

Canine glaucoma, much like human glaucoma, can impair a dog's vision and ultimately lead to blindness if untreated. Glaucoma in dogs can be caused by improper drainage of the fluid in the eye or infection causing the eye to become overfilled and enlarged. Using herbal therapies, such as bilberry, ginkgo, burdock, greater celandine, rosemary and meadowsweet, will not treat the condition but bring relief from the discomfort caused by pressure within the eye.

  1. Bilberry

    • Bilberry extract is the most common herbal eye remedy used to address a number of eye problems. The extract contains properties that provide support for the structure of the eye. The features supported by the therapy include the cornea and retina. Bilberry supplements typically come in 80 mg capsules and are administered daily using 1/4 of a pill for dogs under 25 lbs., 1/2 capsule for dogs 25 to 50 lbs., one pill for dogs 50 to 100 lbs. and 1 1/2 to 2 capsules for dogs exceeding 100 lbs.

    Ginkgo

    • Ginkgo, in conjunction with bilberry, aids in minimizing the effects of canine glaucoma. The properties in ginkgo increase blood circulation and therefore help supply blood to the eye. Cells are strengthen and support damaged eye structure. Ocusone is a natural herb treatment that contains ginkgo and supports ocular health. Read the recommendations on the box for proper dosage.

    Eye-Heal

    • Eye-Heal is a natural liquid product that contains burdock, greater celandine, rosemary and meadowsweet. Burdock is a natural glaucoma therapy that uses detoxifying agents for eye infections. Because glaucoma can be caused by an eye infection, the burdock cleanses the eye in an effort to treat the infection. Greater celandine supports the immune system to promote good vision. Rosemary is a common household herb that has natural anti-inflammatory features. It can relieve the discomfort from eye pressure and decrease throbbing sensations. The primary function of meadowsweet is to soothe the eyes.

Boil about 20 ml of water and remove from heat. Add five drops of Eye-Heal, and let the solution cool. Soak a clean cotton ball or swab into the formula after it has cooled and sweep across your dog's eyes from the inside out. Use a new cotton applicator for each eye. You can use this solution up to three times a day.
