Kennel cough is a condition that is like the common cold for humans. It is more frequent in dogs but can occur in cats. Kennel cough produces a dry, hacking cough that sounds like something is stuck in their throat. Kennel cough is caused by bacteria or viruses. It is a common illnesses but can become dangerous if not treated. If left untreated, kennel cough can cause bronchitis and can damage the trachea. You can treat kennel cough at home, however, if your pet's condition does not improve in a few days, you should see your vet.

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Sterilize your pet's water bowls with hydrogen peroxide. Fill his bowl with clean water and add three drops of peroxide and 2 tsp. of honey for every 8 oz. of water. Allow your dog to drink this water instead of plain water until his cough subsides.

Mix three drops of peroxide and 2 tsp. of honey with 4 ounces of water and brush your dog's teeth. The honey in the mixture can help quiet your pet's cough immediately. Brush the teeth again when you pet starts coughing.

    Raw Honey

    • Honey is a natural antiseptic and contains healing properties that can heal a mild case of kennel cough. Add raw honey to a cup of warm water. (Raw honey is honey that has not been processed. It still contains the honeycomb, pollen and live enzymes.) Offer this to your pet to drink. If you have a difficult time getting your pet to drink the mixture, you can administer it by dropper. Give your pet a few drops of the honey mixture every few hours to calm the cough.

    Peppermint

    • A strong peppermint tea can be very soothing for your pet. Add 4 tsp. of dried peppermint leaves to boiling water. Allow the leaves to steep for about 15 minutes, then strain. Add honey to the tea to sweeten it and to add additional healing properties. Give a few drops to your pet every hour until the coughing goes away.

    Wld Cherry Bark

    • Wild cherry bark is a bitter herb with astringent properties. You can find wild cherry bark at most health food stores. Mix the herb with water and give your pet several drops three times per day. Wild cherry bark will reduce the inflammation in the throat and cause the cough to subside. You can purchase wild cherry bark in syrup and tea form. Use the recommended children's dosage located on the package.

    Humidity

    • Keep the air inside your home moist with a humidifier. This will prevent your pet's throat from drying out and will help ease coughing. For best results, place the humidifier close to your pet but out of its reach.
