Struvite stones are caused by bacteria and infections that invade a dog's urinary system. Struvite is composed of the crystal compounds of ammonium, phosphate and magnesium. The biochemical urea is excreted through the urine. If bacteria invades the urine and urea, then the urea turns into ammonia. The toxicity in ammonia is detrimental to the cells and causes inflammation and the struvite crystals are formed. Female dogs make up 85 percent of the cases of struvite bladder stones. Beagles, English cocker spaniels, and miniature schnauzers are the breeds typically affected by struvite. The average age of the cases is 2.9 years old.

Medical Treatment

Sometimes the stones are tiny enough that they can be passed. This can be done through the manipulation of the bladder that helps to ease the stone out through the urethra. The procedure is called "voiding urohydropropulsion." It enables the stones to float about in the urine and, thereby, forcing the stones out. It only works if the stones are quite small and if there are a multitude of stones present. Struvite stones can also be surgically removed. There are, however, several negative aspects to keep in mind. They include: the risk of problems from the anesthesia, the pain following the procedure, the chance of contamination of the stomach area with infected urine, the chance that some stones are mistakenly left in or the chance of the stitches splitting.
Holistic Diets
-
A healthier and more effective way for treating dogs with Struvite is to follow an organic holistic diet. It is a poor diet that causes the crystal stones to form initially. Commercial dog foods can contain cheap grains, dyes, preservatives and meat substitutes. They can cause an imbalance in the pH in the dog's bladder. The direct result is the forming of the stones that will cause the infections. Some of these commercial brands are void of some of the nutrients that a dog's system requires. Organic dog food from the health food store, pet store or from your veterinarian are the healthier choices. Be certain that the food is comprised of vegetables with nutrients, lean protein and healthy oils. There is also a dog food called S/D diet that is made by Hill's that meets the specific needs of dissolving struvite stones. It is not considered a form of a regular diet, but should just be taken to dissolve the stones. Natural supplements that are especially designed for the prevention of Struvite can also be given. There are no side effects and do not cause an interaction with other medications.
Preventative Measures
-
It is of utmost importance that your dog have daily exercise. It will lower stress, aid the immune system and encourage the elimination of toxins. In addition, be certain your dog drinks plenty of water. The water is an agent in flushing out the dangerous toxins from the bladder, in addition to helping all the organs to function well. Filtered water is preferred. Your dog will then have a chance at a long, healthy life.
