Flea Treatment for Puppies Under 12 Weeks

It is common for young puppies to end up with fleas. They may have gotten them from their mother or from another dog living in the house. Puppies under 12 weeks old are not old enough for a prescription flea medication. The only solution is to use all natural home remedies to treat the fleas on the puppies. This will not only benefit them, but it will benefit the family that lives in the house from getting bitten by any of those fleas.

  1. Bath

    • Wash the puppies. Fill the bathtub up about 2 inches high with lukewarm bath water. Use a tiny bit of dish soap to wash the puppies. Keep the puppies wet and soapy for five minutes. This is all the time it takes to kill every flea on the puppy. Make sure you dry the puppies immediately after you rinse them off. This is because puppies can catch a chill.

    Salt

    • Keep the puppies in the bathroom for the night and sprinkle salt all over the carpets. In the morning, vacuum up the salt and all of the dead fleas. The salt cuts the skeleton of the flea and causes it to dehydrate. You can then let the puppies back out of the bathroom as they will now not pick up any new fleas.

    Homemade Flea Spray

    • You can also treat puppies under 12 weeks with a homemade flea spray. Fill an empty spray bottle with water. Add five drops of cedar wood oil and five drops of lavender oil. Fleas hate these odors and will generally stay far away from them. Spray the solution on the puppies up to three times per day until you no longer see fleas. You can also sprinkle cedar wood chips in the yard to keep the fleas from coming anywhere near your property.
