Dog Flea Symptoms

Imagine the insect bite that won't stop itching. Now imagine that there is a bunch of bites that won't stop itching. This is similar to what your dog experiences when being bothered by fleas.

  1. Symptoms

    • More itching than normal especially on the tail, legs and stomach is the most common symptom. Red blotches and hair loss can indicate an allergic reaction.

    Causes

    • Fleas are passed from other dogs and animals. They're also tracked in on shoes.

    Prevention

    • Keeping the dog outdoors can help but if not, then fleas may not be 100 percent preventable. Shampooing with flea shampoo and putting a flea collar on your dog can help prevent fleas.

    Effects

    • Fleas spread to other animals in the home or humans. Humans may also be allergic to bites. Fleas, if swallowed, can lead to certain types of worms that can lead to other medical problems.

    Treatments

    • Bathe the dog in a flea treating shampoo. Comb your dog's hair with a fine-tooth flea comb and drown the fleas in a bowl of water. Flush the fleas. Then treat with flea medicines that are dropped in liquid format on the nape of the dog's neck once a month.
