Are Rolaids Toxic for Dogs?

Your dog can get into things that will make him sick. Rolaids are more likely to soothe his stomach than upset it. But, should you notice any disturbing symptoms, call your vet immediately.

  1. Rolaids

    • Rolaids are an antacid and should not harm your dog. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, he could show uneasiness, depending on how many Rolaids were eaten.

    Call your vet

    • Call your vet immediately should your dog show any red flag symptoms, such as vomiting, heaving, diarrhea, stumbling or excessive crying or whining.

    Warning

    • The Rolaids eaten by your dog may not be the culprit. Look around for any signs that something else may have been ingested with the Rolaids. Your dog may have decided to sample several other items while you weren't looking.

    Possibly food

    • If there was any food left out, make sure you pinpoint exactly what it was. Many foods that humans eat can make a dog sick. You can go to peteducation.com to find some examples of things your dog should not eat. Determine what could have been ingested and contact your vet or an after-hours animal clinic to figure out the best plan of action.

    Emergencies

    • According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, always remember that any first aid administered to your pet should be followed by immediate veterinary care. First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet's life until it receives veterinary treatment.

As a dog owner, always have an after-hours clinic number on hand for emergencies. Look through your local phone book to find a list of clinics. You can also go to localvets.com (find a link in the Resources section). Key in your zip code to find a veterinarian closest to you, or scroll down the page and click on the map to search by state.
