The FDA recently approved a version of the drug prozac to help treat separation anxiety in dogs. The drug is called Reconcile. It is being made by the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

About the Drug
-
Reconcile is chewable, and it is flavored specifically for canine taste buds. It was shown in clinical trials to significantly decrease the symptoms of separation anxiety in dogs.
Separation Anxiety
-
Seperation anxiety reportedly strikes 10 to 20 percent of dogs. It can be a severe problem for some, causing the dog to essentially go hysterical when it is left alone.
Side Effects
-
The most common side effect of Reconcile is drowsiness and lethargy. It can also cause appetite reduction, and/or an increase in aggression.
Simple Training
-
When your veterinarian prescribes Reconcile, she may also instruct you on some behavioral modification techniques. These methods are used to allow the dog to adapt to your coming and going behavior. One such technique involves gradually increasing the amount of time that you are away from your dog, so that it can become more comfortable in your absence.
Length of Time
-
With the combination of the drug and training some dogs show behavioral improvements in as little as 1 to 2 weeks. Others may take up to 8 weeks before an upturn. If no improvement is made within 8 weeks you may want to seek other treatment plans.
