Sulphur Shampoo for Dogs

Sulphur shampoo is a topical skin cleanser for dogs. When allergies, mites or atopic dermatitis irritates a dog's skin, a sulphur bath relieves itching and helps skin heal. This inexpensive remedy cures many simple skin problems.

  1. Cleansing

    • Sulphur shampoo works as a cleanser. The lathering action removes dead skin, scales and loose dirt. Some shampoos contain a degreasing ingredient for removing excess skin oil.

    Sulphur

    • The shampoo contains about 2 percent sulphur. Sulphur is a natural antiseptic used for controlling skin bacteria and fungal infections.

    Salicylic Acid

    • The shampoo may contain salicylic acid, which is an antibacterial agent that helps to relieve itching and remove skin scale.

    Application

    • Wet the dog hair, apply sulphur shampoo, and work into a lather. Leave lather on 5 to 10 minutes, working into the hair. Don't use around the eyes. Rinse well.

    Considerations

    • The distinctive sulphur odor of the shampoo may remain for several days. But it is not harmful to your pet.

    Expert Advice

    • Your veterinarian or groomer may suggest specific sulphur shampoos. Some shampoos are combined with ingredients such as peroxide or glycerin for added benefits.
