When you have a dog that is sick with diarrhea or vomiting, this may lead to a serious situation. Also, a dog that is traveling for a long period in an automobile may be too excited to drink water. If dehydration sets in, which it will likely do, your dog could die quickly. The first choice is to get your dog to the vet as soon as possible for some intravenous fluids. If this isn't possible, you must persuade your dog to drink water, and lots of it.
Things You'll Need
- water, chicken broth
Instructions
Put your sick pooch in a calm environment and offer the water. If she refuses to drink, try squirting some water in her mouth with an eye dropper.
If the dog still doesn't want to drink water, bring out the serious arsenal. Open a can of chicken broth, available at any grocery store, and mix a couple of tablespoons of broth with a cup of water. Let her smell the chicken broth before you mix it in, and let the dog watch you pour it in the water dish.
I have never had a dog refuse the chicken broth/water mix. Mine, who is generally very obstinate on our vacation trips, will usually drain the entire water dish if it has a little broth. With no broth, she won't drink a drop of water on our two-day trips, and that's a recipe for disaster! At home, she's a great straight water-drinker.
