Mange is a skin disease caused by mites on and in the skin of an affected animal. There are three types of mange, two of which are contagious.
-
Demodectic Mange
-
Also known as Demodex canis, this is the most common form of mange. The mites are found on dogs and humans. Mange only occurs if there is an issue with the body's immune system. Therefore, this mange is not contagious.
Cheyletiella Mange
-
These mites travel beneath dead layers of skin, giving the appearance of "walking dandruff." The mites cause mild itching, mild to severe dandruff and lesions. This form of mange is contagious and can be spread between dogs, humans and other pets.
Sarcoptic Mange
-
The most serious form of mange is caused by sarcoptic mites living just beneath the skin's surface. The mange results in severe itching, widespread hair loss and changes in the skin's pigmentation. Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to dogs and humans. When humans contract it, it is called scabies.
Solution
-
Your veterinarian will prescribe a dip treatment or shampoo to get rid of your dog's specific type of mange. These treatments must be used weekly for several weeks to fully remove and kill mites and their eggs.
Precautions
-
If your pet has come in contact with a contagious form of mange, it is important to wash and clean everything--including clothes, floors and the home environment. Rigorous daily cleaning is vital in preventing the mites from infecting you or reinfecting your pets.
