Proper Dosage of Frontline Plus for Dogs

Frontline Plus is a popular flea and tick medication administered to dogs and cats. Unlike cats, which only need one common dosage amount, dogs require different amounts of dosage depending on their weight. Often the breed and age of the dog determine the weight. Proper dosage of Frontline Plus for dogs is determined by weight alone. Having your dog weighed, or knowing the correct weight class, will help determine the correct dosage to protect your dog from fleas and ticks.

  1. Weight and Size

    • Know the weight and size of your dog as this is how the proper dosage for Frontline Plus is found. Understanding what breed your dog is will also help determine the general weight allowance. Weight class breaks down Frontline Plus dosage; there are four weight classes, and each weight class has a different dosage.

    Box Colors

    • Each weight class has a different color box to help dog owners separate them. The Orange box is for use with dogs in the 22 lbs. and under, class such as miniature breeds and Chihuahuas. The Orange box is also used for puppies from 3 months up to 1 year depending on the breed. Use the Blue box for the 23 to 44 lb. weight class; this includes Beagles, Terriers, Jack Russells and Poodles. Use the Purple box weight class of 45 to 88 lbs. with breeds such as Dalmatians, Golden Labs, German Shepherds and Collies. Use the Red box if your dog weighs between 89 and 132 lbs.; breeds in this class include the giant breed dogs such as Saint Bernard, Husky, Dobermans, Boxers and Wolfhounds.

    Considerations for Growth

    • All dog breeds will start with the lowest dosage of under 22 lbs. while they are puppies. Remember that the larger breeds will need proper dosage for each stage of their lives and will change dosage requirements as they grow. Knowing the proper weight allowance for your dog's breed at different stages in life will help determine proper dosage; your veterinarian will have this information. Also remember, dogs that are fat, even though a smaller breed, will most likely require a larger dosage if their weight requires it.

    Application

    • Before getting hold of the dog, remove the backing strip from the dosage packaging by cutting off the tip of the package and then pealing back the strip. This frees the applicator from the safety container. Snap open the top of the applicator at the line shown, keeping the applicator upright. Standing behind and to the side of your dog, put one hand under the chin while the other hand applies the Frontline Plus to the base of the top of the neck. This spot is the best location as the dog cannot reach around to lick it off.
