Torbutrol is a prescription brand name opioid pain killer and cough suppressant. It is also prescribed for easing nausea in dogs, horses, rabbits, birds, ferrets and cats. Its active ingredient is butrophanol tartrate. Torbutrol is manufactured by Fort Dodge. According to the manufacturer, Torbutrol was only tested on dogs. Other brands of butrophanol tartrate include Stadol, Torbugesic and Torbugesic-SA.

Cough

Torbutrol helps eases coughs, but only certain coughs that do not produce mucus. For those cases, the pet still needs to cough up the mucus in order to get relief.
Operations

According to "The Pill Book Guide to Medication For Your Dog and Cat" (Kate AW Roby, VMD, et al, 1998), Torbutrol is given by injection to ease pain from surgery. It can also be combined with tranquilizers before surgery.
Off Label Uses

Other unapproved uses for Torbutrol in pets are to ease the nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, to ease pain from burns, or pain from pancreatitis.

"The Pill Book Guide to Medication For Your Dog and Cat" points out that pain relief in cats is unpredictable, lasting from 15 minutes to 8 hours.

A type of Torbutrol is made for humans, but this dose is far too strong for a dog or a cat. Do not take Torbutrol made for pets, because it can become addictive.
