The Symptoms of Poisioning in Dogs

For many people, owning a dog is nearly the equivalent of having a child. If a pet dog is ill, it can be devastating for both the animal and the pet owner. Knowing the causes and symptoms of poisoning, one of the most dangerous problems for pets, can help you to save your dog's life.

  1. Symptoms of Poisoning

    • Symptoms can vary depending on the type of poison ingested. The most common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, difficulty breathing and seizures. Other symptoms include hazy eyes or sudden blindness, changes in behavior and muscle spasms.

    Recognizing Signs of Poisoning

    • Look for any illness or sudden change in your dog's behavior, especially if you have caught him near a potential poison recently. Some poisons will cause almost immediate reactions, while others will have symptoms that are slow to manifest.

    Poisons Around the House

    • Some household cleaners and similar products are more toxic than others, though there are many products that can cause poisoning. Some of these include concentrated pesticides, soaps and shampoos for personal hygiene, fuels and antifreeze, and detergents used for household cleaning. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can be poisonous as well.

    Natural Poisons

    • Many kinds of plants are toxic to dogs. This includes common house plants such as poinsettias, aloe vera and decorative ivy, as well as some weeds and plants that dogs may encounter in the yard or countryside.

    Treatment for Poisoning

    • If a poisoning has occurred, call your veterinarian immediately. Most vets will recommend that you induce vomiting, usually by giving your dog one teaspoon of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide per 10 pounds of body weight. Knowing the source of poisoning will make treatment much easier and more effective.
