Flea infestation is one inconvenient reality about dog ownership. These pests make your dog uncomfortable and find their way into your carpets and furniture. Use a good flea treatment to avoid this unpleasant situation.

Preventatives
-
The single best way to avoid a flea infestation is by using a preventative. These medications stop fleas before they are able to infest a broad area. There are several options for medicines that prevent fleas including K9 Advantix, Frontline and Bio Spot. These medications can be applied as a topical solution, orally or on a collar. Often, they also prevent ticks as well.
Shampoo
-
If you notice an infestation of fleas, the most common first step is to use a medicated shampoo. Flea shampoos cleanse the dog of the infestation and prevent them from coming back in the near future.
It's pretty simple--just wash the dog and rinse to kill and remove the fleas.
Comb
-
If you think your dog has fleas but it seems like a minor case, try a flea comb. These combs, sold over the counter online and in pet shops, allow you to groom your dog while at the same time ridding him of fleas.
Spray
-
Flea spray is used if your dog is experiencing a severe infestation. Sprays are applied directly to your dog's coat and typically remove 100 percent of fleas. They take about 24 hours to work.
Powder
-
If you have a pretty advanced infestation on your hands, you will also have to consider how you will rid your home of fleas. To kill fleas that are on your carpet or couch, purchase an over-the-counter flea powder. Just apply the powder directly to the carpet or furniture and then rinse with soap and water.
Fogger
-
If you have tried the powder and fleas are still in your furniture and carpets, you may have to resort to a fogger. Foggers are used throughout a house and require occupants to leave for at least 30 minutes while the area is ventilated.
