Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder that afflicts humans and animals such as dogs. Researchers believe that it is a genetic disorder in dogs, most common in males. Dogs who possibly suffer from OCD have unusual compulsions that their owner can look for.
-
Constant Licking
-
A dog that suffers from OCD will constantly lick themselves or objects such as the floor.
Constant Chewing and Scratching
-
The dog may constantly chew and scratch their body and paws. Although such repetitive chewing and scratching often leads to open sores, a dog with OCD will keep doing it.
Constant Barking
-
A dog with OCD might repeatedly bark whether or not there is an obvious reason. The reason may be hard to define, as the barking is likely a result of an obsessive thought the dog has.
Eating Unusual Objects
-
The dog may also eat unusual objects such as plastic, rocks, clay, dirt and fabric.
Tail Chasing
-
A dog chasing his tail once in a while may seem cute and funny. However, if this behavior is exhibited on a regular basis, it may be a sign of OCD.
Social Anxiety
-
Dogs with OCD are often unable to play and socialize with other dogs. A more severe symptom is the inability to have a relationship with their owners. They may even develop sudden fears from their owners or other animals.
