How to Help Dogs With Liver Cancer

Learning your dog has liver cancer can be devastating. However, canine liver cancer is not necessarily terminal. Treatment options do exist and there are plenty of things you can do at home to help your dog fight his disease. Although helping your pet can be difficult emotionally, the steps you can take are not, in themselves, difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your vet about possible treatment for your dog's liver cancer. Your vet may suggest surgery or chemotherapy. Surgery can remove primary liver tumors and may extend the life of your dog for a few years.

    • 2

Do not allow your dog to lick or scratch his incision postsurgery. Putting a shirt on your dog can help prevent this. Check the incision for signs of infection.

    • 3

Administer medications to your dog as prescribed by your vet. Drugs used to control pain include Tramadol, Butorphanol, Deramaxx and Rimadyl.

    • 4

Do not vaccinate your dog with liver cancer as it could be harmful to your pet. If your state requires certain vaccinations, ask your vet for a waiver.

    • 5

Consider changing your dog's diet to help her immune system. A homemade diet low in carbohydrates and high in omega-3 fatty acids will help you dog fight her liver cancer.

    • 6

Remove toxins harmful to the liver from your household. Lawn-care chemicals and household cleansers may be carcinogenic if your dog licks them off his paws.
