Hospice care is an option you may choose if your beloved dog is near the end of a long, happy life, or if she is in her prime and has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
-
Significance
-
As it is possible to provide palliative care for a person in the comfortable and loving environment of their own home, it is also possible to do so for a dog.
Benefits
-
Hospice care is focused on comfort, rather than a cure. A person can spend time loving their dog at home until he passes on, or until the decision to euthanize can be made.
Effects
-
It is difficult to focus on anything but the dog while providing hospice care, but many owners feel the satisfaction of knowing that they have continued their promise of a lifetime commitment to their pet.
The Veterinarian
-
A veterinarian should work with the owner throughout the hospice care of the dog, providing whatever medicines are needed to keep her comfortable, and providing advice when needed.
Considerations
-
Family and friends can be a support system while an owner is providing hospice care for the dog, perhaps giving them a break. Some veterinarians make house calls, which is better for the dog's comfort. (See Resource.)
