Naturopathic Remedies for Dogs

Naturopathy doesn't so much offer remedies as it does a different approach to health and wellness. It doesn't use drugs or surgery. Rather, it focuses on preventative health and seeks to support a pet's immune system while using natural treatments--such as nutrition, massage, herbs and acupuncture--to alleviate symptoms, while the body heals itself of illnesses.

  1. Nutrition

    • Naturopathy focuses on nutrition as a way of preventing illness and of supporting the body as it heals itself, should illness occur.

Naturopathic practitioners encourage pet guardians to feed their dogs diets of natural foods and human-grade products. Naturopathy also focuses on feeding species the correct foods for their bodies; for dogs, this means diets rich in meats.

    Herbal Medicines

    • A naturopathic practitioner might suggest herbs or flower essences to support the body's healing efforts and ease symptoms of canine conditions ranging from fleas to cancer. Herbs used in the treatment of dogs include calendula to alleviate skin irritation, coltsfoot for coughing, and garlic, which has many uses but is probably best known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

    Massage

    • Massage is a gentle, non-invasive way to relieve pain and stress. It helps reduce stiffness and fatigue, increase circulation and flush waste products from a dog's muscle tissue. Massage for older dogs can relieve pain in joints and boost the dog's immune system.

    Aromatherapy

    • Essential oils have antiseptic, detoxification and revitalization powers, can increase resistance to disease and strengthen immune systems, according to homeopathic practitioners. Aromatherapy blends are used to help dogs with skin problems, itching, fleas, arthritis and more.

    Acupuncture

    • Acupuncture involves the use of fine needles to restore the chi, or energy stream, at certain points along the dog's energy path. Acupuncture is used to strengthen dogs' immune systems, relieve pain and improve organ function. It can be a supportive therapy in the treatment of paralysis, arthritis and gastrointestinal problems. It also stimulates nerves, increases blood circulation, relieves muscle spasms and causes the release of endorphins.
