How to Relieve Canine Arthritis
Exercise and feeding dogs the proper diet can eliminate excessive weight. Additional weight adds stress and pressure on sore joints and bones. Losing weight will allow a dog to be pain free. Maintaining the proper weight will eliminate some pain, but will not cure the disease completely.
Visit your veterinarian for prescription medications. Common pills are anti-inflammatory drugs that will relieve short-term pain. A variety of medications are available. Other medications include Glucosamine, which strengthens the bones and joints. Never administer a dog human medications for pain relief.
Kennel an animal in a cage to decrease overexertion. Having a rest period during the day will give bones and joints time to relax. A kennel should always be large enough where a dog can fully stand up. If the dog is not used to being in a kennel, designate an area by using a dog bed and blanket.
Ask your dog's vet about surgical procedures. Arthotomy is often preformed to remove bone and cartilage fragments. Total hip replacements can be executed if the dog has hip dysplasia or severe arthritis of the hip. Surgery is usually a last resort to relieve arthritis pain.
Relieve sore joints by adding warm or hot packs when a dog is resting. Similar to humans, if a joint is severely inflamed, add a cold ice pack. Use packs at night, after an active day. Dogs will enjoy the sense of relief as well as the attention.
