Medicine for Dog Skin Allergies

Skin allergies can be one of the most irritating issues dogs may have to deal with. The itching and scratching can be almost unbearable for both the dogs suffering from it and the owners watching their dogs chew themselves all day. Thankfully, there are various medications that can be helpful in reducing these annoying symptoms.

  1. Hydroxyzine

    • The prescription medication hydroxyzine (Atarax) can be a very effective antihistamine. Veterinarians prescribe this medication for treating allergic symptoms, itching and dermatitis.

    Steroids

    • For severe cases of skin allergies, when prompt relief is necessary, veterinarians may provide a steroid shot. However, it important to limit these shots to only exceptional cases.

    Allergy Shots

    • Owners may request to have their dog tested for determining the source of the skin allergies. Once the source is identified, special allergy shots containing small traces of the offending antigen are given periodically to reduce the immune system's reaction.

    Diphenhydramine

    • Diphenhydramine, better known as Benadryl, is an effective over-the-counter antihistamine. It should be strictly administered under the professional supervision of a veterinarian.

    Allergy Shampoos

    • While working form the inside out is the best plan, allergy shampoos may be effective when used in conjunction with other treatments. Shampoos containing coloring, perfume or chemicals should be avoided, while products with oatmeal and aloe vera may be beneficial.
