Nasal Mites in Dogs

Nasal mites rarely cause symptoms in dogs, but sometimes dogs develop an allergy to them. Curing a case of nasal mites requires the removal of these small animals from the dog's nasal passages.

  1. Symptoms

    • Sneezing, reverse sneezing, pawing at the nose and nasal discharges are the most common symptoms of nasal mites.

    Diagnoisis

    • The diagnosis gets made by flushing the nose or during rhinoscopy. If the vet finds mites in the animal's nasal cavities, she will prescribe the appropriate medication.

    Scientific Name

    • Pneumonyssoides caninum is the scientific name for this arachnid. This small mite reaches an average size of about 1 mm.

    Treatment

    • Milbemycin and ivermectin cure nasal mites in most cases. Ivermectin is used less frequently than milbemycin because it harms certain dog breeds.

    Similar Conditions

    • A veterinarian will track down and diagnose the cause of the dog's chronic nasal irritation. Simple allergies also cause nasal irritation.
