While the Pekingese isn't particularly prone to skin problems, there is one type of dermatological issue affecting the breed. While all of the wrinkles on the Peke's head give him character, they're also the perfect place for bacteria to brew and cause inflammation and infection. Inspect and clean your Peke's wrinkles regularly to keep skin fold dermatitis at bay.

Pekingese have wrinkles on the head and tail. Skin wrinkles irritated by hairs, dirt or skin oils become inflamed. The more wrinkled your Peke, the more likely he is to suffer from skin fold dermatitis. For affected Pekes, skin fold dermatitis is often a lifelong problem if regular wrinkle cleansing is neglected. Cleaning your dog's wrinkles daily with a mild antiseptic cleanser and drying them thoroughly can prevent skin fold dermatitis or subsequent outbreaks. If your Peke develops inflamed skin folds, take him to the vet for treatment. The vet might prescribe antibiotics to treat any skin fold infections.
