What Does Metronidazole Treat in Dogs?

Metronidazole (Flagyl RX) is an antibiotic with many uses for dogs. It has valuable properties as a bactericidal and an anti-inflammatory. It is also highly effective at treating tetanus and periodontal disease. However, because it has stronger side effects than other antibiotics, it is often used sparingly or in conjunction with other medications.

  1. Bactericidal

    • Metronidazole alters the DNA of bacterial microorganisms, effectively killing them. It is only effective against anaerobic bacteria, and is therefore used in conjunction with other antibiotics if an infection involves more than one type of bacteria.

    Anti-Inflammatory

    • The anti-inflammatory effects of Metronidazole can alleviate irritation and inflammation of the bowel. It is often prescribed to treat diarrhea.

    Tetanus

    • Metronidazole is one of the most effective drugs in treating tetanus in dogs. However, it has more side effects than other antibiotics when used over a long period of time.

    Periodontal Disease

    • Metronidazole is effective in treating severe or chronic mouth disease. Due to an increasing resistance to antibiotics, however, it may be administered in conjunction with another or several other antibiotics.

    Skin Infections

    • A topical gel containing Metronidazole can be used to effectively correct a wide variety of skin infections and irritations.
