Foods to Keep a Dog's Coat Soft

A healthy dog should have a soft, glossy coat. A dry or greasy coat and flaky, itchy skin can be caused by poor diet, food allergies or an underlying illness. To restore your dog's coat to a showroom shine, choose the best quality dog foods, groom regularly and supplement as needed. According to the "Journal of Nutrition," protein, zinc, antioxidants and "good fats" are the building blocks of a healthy coat.

  1. Chicken

    • High quality protein is necessary for healthy skin, and healthy skin means healthy fur. Chicken is easy to digest and also contains zinc, a critical skin-building nutrient.

    Carrots

    • Rich in vitamin A, carrots are a crunchy treat that can be served raw or cooked, mashed and added to your dog's daily rations.

    Salmon

    • Cooked salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids. It is a high-quality protein and a good source of vitamin B-12.

    Eggs

    • A highly digestible protein source, eggs contain biotin and vitamin B-12, essential for healthy skin and coat. Cooked eggs are recommended over raw.

    Commercial Dog Foods

    • When choosing a commercial dog food, look for brands that contain the most meat ingredients. Avoid foods that contain soy, wheat and corn--these are common allergens.

    Cautions

    • Avocados have a reputation as a skin and coat softener, but the ASPCA has posted a warning on their possible toxicity (see Resources).
