Are Human Medicines Safe for Dogs?

While there are some human medicines that are safe for dogs, there are even more that can cause them harm. This article lists some human medicines that are safe for dogs and some that are unsafe, but it is by no means a complete list. If you are unsure whether a certain medicine is safe for a dog, consult a veterinarian.

  1. Common Household Medicines That Are Safe for Dogs

    • Regular buffered aspirin is safe for dogs in small doses. As with humans, buffered aspirin works for dogs as a pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory. The dose for a dog should be determined by a vet. Giving dogs too much buffered aspirin can cause stomach problems or seizures. (It is not recommended for cats.)

      The antihistamine Benadryl can safely be given to dogs to treat allergies and itching. The suggested dose is ½ mg for every pound that the dogs weighs, given no more than once every eight hours.

      Pepto Bismol can be given to dogs with diarrhea, vomiting, and gas. Dogs should be given no more than 1 tsp for every 5 lbs of weight and it should be administered only once every six hours.

    Other Treatments

    • Vitamin B can be used as an appetite stimulant for dogs as long as the dose does not exceed 2 ml every 24 hours.

      Dramamine can safely be given to dogs for motion sickness. The suggested dose is no more than 50 mg every eight hours.

      Hydrogen peroxide (the 3 percent variety) can be used to induce vomiting if accidental poisoning is suspected. Ten milliliters should be given every 15 minutes, and call a veterinarian to determine whether the dog needs additional care.

    Human Prescription Drugs That Are Safe for Dogs

    • The antibiotics amoxicillin, penicillin, ampicillin and tetracycline all can be given to dogs under a veterinarian's care. The doses should be strictly adhered to in order to avoid an overdose.

    Human Medications That Should Never Be Given to Dogs

    • Ibuprofen, Tylenol and any nebulizer medication can be dangerous when given to dogs, as well as iron supplements. These all have the potential to be fatal. For example, two Tylenol can cause severe tissue damage, vomiting, salivation, weakness and abdominal pain.

    Dangerous Plants

    • The cannabis plant, while not toxic to humans, can be lethal to dogs. Never give a dog any type of illicit drug.
