The Side Effects of Clavamox

Clavamox, a medication prescribed for treating bacterial infections in dogs and cats, combines clavulonic acid and the antibiotic amoxicillin. Clavamox is available in tablets and in a powder to be mixed with water for oral drops.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Clavamox can cause side effects of mild diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Pet owners should contact their veterinarian if the diarrhea is severe or lasts more than three days.

    Secondary Infections

    • Because Clavamox kills friendly bacteria as well as harmful bacteria, treatment can result in the pet developing a yeast infection or fungal infection.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Clavamox include difficulty breathing, rash or hives, facial or mouth swelling, or loss of consciousness.

    Overdosing

    • If the pet receives too much Clavamox, side effects include more pronounced nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and a rash. Kidney problems also can develop from a Clavamox overdose.

    Contraindications

    • Pets taking other antibiotics or other drugs may not be able to take Clavamox at the same time. Pets allergic to any penicillin drugs should not be given Clavamox.
