What Are the Symptoms of Dog Diabetes?

Diabetes commonly occurs in older dogs and can be treated and managed safely and easily, allowing your dog to return to its normal quality of life. If you believe your dog has diabetes, it is important to seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible, as proper treatment is essential to the survival and health of your dog.

  1. Excessive Water Consumption

    • Diabetes causes an increase in the amount of glucose in the body, which usually triggers excessive thirst. Increased water consumption is usually the first symptom pet owners notice.

    Increased Urination

    • Because diabetes often causes increased thirst, you may find that your diabetic dog is urinating more often than normal.

    Lethargy

    • If your dog is suddenly more lazy than normal, it may be a sign of illness. Lethargy is a symptom of many illnesses but is commonly present with diabetes. This can be mistaken for normal aging and is often missed until it is accompanied by other symptoms.

    Weight Gain

    • If your dog suddenly gains weight without a change in diet or activity level, it may be a sign of diabetes or another illness.

    Weight Loss

    • Like weight gain, unexpected weight loss can be a sign of illness and should be investigated to rule out a problem.

    Stomach Problems

    • Dog's with diabetes may also have an increased appetite, vomiting or abdominal pain.
