Fleas are a major issue for dogs and the people who call them their pets. These little insects can sneak their way into a dog's coat, causing them great discomfort. In some cases, if a dog is severely infested, fleas can get into bed linens and carpets, causing owners to spend unnecessary amounts of money exterminating them. Frontline is one of the most common ways to prevent and kill fleas, but it's not always effective. In those cases there are other ways to prevent and kill these pests.
-
K9 Advantix
-
Frontline is not the only medicine for killing or preventing flea infestation. Another popular product is K9 Advantix, which is applied between the dog's shoulder blades just like Frontline.
Advantage Flea Control
-
Advantage is another effective flea control product also applied the same way as the above two medicines.
Sentinel
-
If you would rather not use a topical medicine then consider Sentinel. Administered in pill form, it kills fleas and ticks.
Natural Flea Prevention
-
If you are not having any luck with these topical and oral medicines then consider natural preventative methods such as adding garlic, sulphur or black walnut hulls to your pet's diet, or soaps and shampoos that include pine cedar, bergamot, rosemary, lavender, citronella, juniper or geranium.
Shampoos
-
Shampoos are another way to kill or control fleas on dogs. Check them out at any pet supermarket or your local grocery store.
Borax
-
Borax can be used around the home or yard to repel fleas. Though it does not kill fleas already on a dog, sprinkling Borax in your yard or around doors will deter fleas from getting near your dog.
Eucalyptus
-
Fleas do not like the smell of eucalyptus leaves, so keeping these leaves around a dog's pen or around the home will repel fleas.
