How to Treat Infections in a Dog

If your dog has an infection, it is important to treat him immediately. Infections can grow into serious problems if left untreated and can cause discomfort and pain for your dog. Infections can be internal, such as a bladder infection, or external, such as an infected wound. In either case, treating him right away will allow your dog to heal quicker and get back to his normal self.

Visit a veterinarian if you suspect an infection. Most infections will not go away on their own and will require antibiotics--something you can only obtain from a licensed veterinarian. It is important to follow dosage instructions and to give the medication to your dog until it is gone.

Give echinacea to your dog to bolster his immunity. Echinacea is an immune-building vitamin that can be bought in most grocery stores, health food stores or discount stores. Open a capsule and stir the contents into your dog's water dish. For big dogs, over 50 lbs, use two capsules for a large water dish. Use one capsule for smaller dishes and smaller dogs.

Allow your dog to get plenty of rest. If necessary, keep him crated more during the day. Sleeping is one of the best ways to allow your dog's body to fight the infection. Keep him comfortable and take him out for walks only as needed for bathroom breaks.

Check your dog's water dish often. If he is not drinking, you may need to forcefully give him water through an empty syringe that can be bought at your pet store. Keeping your dog hydrated is also crucial for him to fight the infection. Pedialyte can also be given to help fight dehydration. Continue to offer your dog food but don't be alarmed if he has no appetite.

Examine your dog's gums to be sure they are pink. If they become pale, or even white, your dog has become seriously anemic and will need to see a veterinarian right away for a more rigorous treatment.
