Many dog owners suspect that their dogs are pregnant, but are hesitant to bring their pet to the veterinarian because it can be costly. Others simply want to confirm their suspicions so they can prepare for a litter of puppies. No matter the reason, this list will help you determine whether or not your dog is pregnant.
Instructions
Observe the dog's eating habits closely. Watch for a sudden decrease in her appetite, because this is the first sign of pregnancy in dogs. Note that as the pregnancy progresses, she will get her appetite back.
Look at your dog's nipples to see if they are swollen. The nipples, as well as the tissue surrounding them, will swell early on and remain that way throughout the rest of the pregnancy. This is considered one of the easiest ways to detect pregnancy in dogs.
Watch for changes in your dog's behavior. If your dog is pregnant, she will become lethargic for the first couple weeks of pregnancy. Her affection towards you will also change. She will either be much more or much less affectionate.
Feel the dog's abdomen if you suspect she is pregnant. If your dog is carrying babies, you will notice that the abdomen is much firmer than that of a regular dog. Feel for any movement inside the abdomen, as this would indicate a definite pregnancy. Be sure not to press too hard, as this could harm the puppies.
Watch to see if your dog is nesting, because she will want a soft and warm spot in which to rest when she gives birth. Your dog will do this a day or two before she gives birth. In addition to building a warm spot for her new babies, your dog will also seem anxious and restless.
