Maybe it's too cold or too hot for you to take your dog for a walk outside, or maybe you're avoiding that nosy neighbor. Whatever the reason, walking your dog on a treadmill may be the perfect solution for your problem. It allows both you and your dog to get exercise in a controlled, comfortable environment.
Things You'll Need
- Collar and leash
- Dog treats (optional)
Instructions
Make your dog comfortable with the treadmill. Allow him to get used to being next to it while it's running. Do not force him to get on the first time he sees it.
Put the dog's collar and leash on. You want to be able to control him while he is on the treadmill.
Walk your dog onto the treadmill. If he responds well to treats, you may choose to give him one for getting on. Stand behind him.
Turn the treadmill on at a very slow speed and begin walking. If the dog becomes afraid and wants to get off, you may allow him to, but try to make him get off from the front or back, and not the side.
Exercise on the treadmill. Start with only a few minutes a day to get your dog used to it, but once he is, you may increase it.
