Causes of Coughing in Dogs

There are many reasons that a dog may cough. Most dogs cough occasionally, but if your dog is unusually lethargic, feverish or coughing up blood, see your veterinarian immediately.

  1. Kennel Cough

    • Kennel cough is a very contagious respiratory illness. It spreads rapidly through kennels and boarding facilities, but a vaccine is now available.

    Bacterial Pneumonia

    • If left untreated, dogs with kennel cough can develop bacterial pneumonia. It can be successfully treated with antibiotics.

    Allergies

    • Allergies are a common cause of coughing in dogs. Dust, grass and cigarette smoke can irritate your dog's respiratory tract and cause a lingering, chronic cough.

    Worms

    • In puppies, certain parasitic worm infections can cause coughing. When puppies expel hook and round worms, they may cough or hiccup.

    Choking

    • Swallowing a large piece of food or rawhide chew can cause a retching sound that is similar to coughing. If the object isn't expelled quickly and your dog begins to panic, try to calm him. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

    Snoring

    • Certain flat-faced breeds may snore and cough more. If your dog is a heavy snorer, chances are good that she will cough more. This type of coughing---if it's severe and chronic---can be corrected by a surgical procedure.
