Symptoms of Liver Disease in Dogs

Liver disease is as serious in dogs as it is in humans. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of health-related conditions in dogs. The liver is a very important organ that is responsible for bile production, detoxifying the blood and removing waste from the body. Liver disease can be caused by several factors such as genetics, bacterial infection or as the result of other health conditions. Treatment depends largely upon the underlying cause of the condition.

  1. Loss of Appetite

    • A dog suffering from liver disease may show a decrease in appetite yet an increase in thirst and urination may be observed. Urine may have an orange discoloration.

    Digestive Upset

    • A dog with liver disease often displays symptoms of stomach upset such as vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. Feces may appear gray in color.

    Lethargy

    • The affected dog will display signs of lethargy and depression such as a decreased interest in normal activities.

    Weight Loss

    • Weight loss occurs as the body fails to maintain itself due to malfunction of the liver.

    Swollen Abdomen

    • Although the dog may be losing weight, the abdomen can appear distended due to enlargement of the liver.

    Jaundice

    • Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the skin that occurs due to liver being unable to process the pigment known as bilirubin properly.
