Symptoms of Scabies in Puppies

Scabies is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the puppy's skin and lay eggs. These mites are highly contagious, and can be passed to humans. Scabies is hard to diagnose, and if it is suspected should be brought to the attention of a vet immediately. The best way to stay clear of scabies is by keeping your animals and environment clean.

  1. Missing Hair

    • Missing localized patches of hair is a symptom of scabies. These are often found on the abdomen, chest, leg and ears.

    Crusty Sores

    • Sores that are covered in a yellowish crust form where the scabies mites have burrowed into the skin.

    Itching

    • Continuous itching is a common sign of scabies. The scratching is often intense and localized to one area.

    Ear Lesions

    • According to the Animal Health Channel, ear lesions are a sign of scabies. These lesions are most often found in the margin of the ear.

    Inflammation

    • Inflammation in areas of hair loss is another sign of scabies. The inflamed area will appear red and swollen.

    Hind Leg Reflex

    • The Pet Care Center states that the puppy will often scratch the hind leg reflexively when the ear is gently scratched by a human. Scabies mites are almost always along the ear.
