The skin is your dog's largest organ and is subject to a variety of problems. Most are not serious, but all should be addressed by a veterinarian if the skin problem appears to be spreading or becoming infected.

Fleas
-
Fleas live on your dog's skin, biting them for a small blood meal. Some dogs are allergic and even a single bite can trigger hair loss.
Hot Spots
-
Hot spots are open sores, often on your dog's leg. They can be caused by continuously damp fur, allergies or nervous licking.
Sunburn
-
Dogs can get sunburned, especially on hairless areas like the nose. Hairless dogs are very susceptible and should be protected from the sun at all times.
Mange
-
Mange is a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin and causes intense itching. Your dog's fur will fall out in patchy clumps.
Cancer
-
Dogs can get skin cancer, both squamous cell and basal cell. Any growth that appears suspicious should be diagnosed by a veterinarian.
Ringworm
-
More common in kittens and puppies, ringworm can affect dogs with a compromised immune system. It is a fungal infection that causes itchy, red skin and hair loss.
