- Desensitization to penicillin: Under the care of an allergy specialist, the person may undergo a process of gradually increasing doses of penicillin to overcome the allergy.
- Doxycycline (oral medication) taken twice daily for 14 days
- Ceftriaxone (intramuscular injection) given once daily for 10 to 14 days
For late-stage or latent syphilis of unknown duration (more than 1 year), the recommended treatment is penicillin G benzathine (2.4 million units) given once a week for three consecutive weeks. Alternative regimens for penicillin-allergic patients include:
- Doxycycline (oral medication) taken twice daily for 28 days
- Ceftriaxone (intramuscular injection) given once daily for 10 to 14 days
