How many dogs live after heartworm treatment?

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the survival rates for dogs with heartworm disease treated with melarsomine dihydrochloride (Immiticide®) were 93.7% at 1 year, 91.7% at 2 years, and 89.7% at 3 years. These survival rates are for dogs that were treated for heartworm disease before the adult worms had caused significant damage to the heart and lungs. Dogs that are treated for heartworm disease after the adult worms have caused significant damage to the heart and lungs may have a lower survival rate.
