Does ocean water make dogs sick?

While dogs love going to the beach and playing in the ocean, it is crucial for pet owners to keep a watchful eye on their dogs around saltwater. Ingestion of a large amount of ocean water can cause salt poisoning, which is not recommended. This means not letting dogs drink large amounts of ocean water, which results in salt toxicity, also termed as hypernatremia. The salt concentrations in ocean water are higher than the kidneys of adult dogs can handle. This is especially dangerous if the dog is also exercising vigorously in hot or humid weather. As the dog pants and speeds up its breathing, even more water is lost as water vapor.
