How long before puppies get shots?

Puppies need to receive two main types of vaccines: core vaccines that every puppy should get, and non-core vaccines that puppies may need depending on their age or lifestyle. The core vaccines include:

* Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)

* Canine Adenovirus-2 (CAV-2)

* Canine Parvovirus (CPV)

* Rabies Virus (RV)

Core vaccines are recommended for all puppies and are usually given between 6-8 weeks of age, 12-16 weeks of age, and then again at 1 year of age.

Non-core vaccines include:

* Bordetella Bronchiseptica

* Canine Herpesvirus (CHV)

* Canine Coronavirus (CCV)

Non-core vaccines may be recommended depending on your puppy's risk of exposure to these diseases. The Bordetella vaccine is often given to puppies that will be going to doggie day care or boarding kennels, as it is a highly contagious respiratory infection. Speak to your vet to determine which vaccines are appropriate for your puppy.
