How to Build a Burrow for a Westie

It is a dog̵7;s natural instinct to want to burrow. Smalls dogs especially ̵2; like the West Highland Terrier ̵2; love pawing into a makeshift "den" to snuggle. Being covered up gives them a sense of security that an open dog bed cannot. Making your own burrow will fulfill your Westie̵7;s burrowing needs and will give him his own place to snooze.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your Westie. Make sure that your burrow is at least 6 inches longer on either side than the dog.

    • 2

Fold your fabric in half. Draw a big circle or oval on your fabric the length of your dog plus 1 foot in diameter.

    • 3

Cut through both layers of fabric so that you have two big circles.

    • 4

Fold one of the previous two circles in half. Trace a half-circle on another two layers of fabric, using the folded circle as a pattern. This will be the top cover of the burrow. Cut through both layers.

    • 5

Pin the half circles together around the edges. Pin the big circles together around the edges.

    • 6

Begin sewing the half circle onto the big circle with the rounded edges meeting. Sew through all four layers of fabric, stopping at the edge of the half circle.

    • 7

Continue to sew the big circles together. Sew nearly all the way around, leaving room to insert the stuffing, cushions or foam.

    • 8

Stuff the big circles with pillows, stuffing or foam. Finish sewing it shut.

    • 9

Stuff the half circle on top with thin bedding or stuffing for warmth. Finish sewing it shut.
