How to Make a Kennel Gate With Welded Wire

Welded wire is commonly used for building dog kennel fences and kennel gates. There are different types of welded wire with different mesh sizes. Welded wire is also available with black-powder coating and commercial grades are galvanized before welding to reduce the potential for rusting. Choosing the appropriate size of mesh for a kennel gate depends upon the size of the dog -- the smaller the dog, the smaller the mesh. The size of the wire and gate depend on the size of the opening. The welded wire is attached to a "2-by-4" frame using fencing nails.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of gate you need for the opening. Leave a 1-inch space on either size for the hinges and latches. If you are in an area with heavy snowfalls in the winter, leave a gap at the bottom of the gate so that it won't push against the snow.

    • 2

Cut the 2-by-4s to the appropriate length, width and height for the opening. Cut the ends of the pieces at a 45-degree angle so the pieces fit together in a box or rectangle form. Screw them together and add the angle braces for a stronger frame.

    • 3

Screw the hinges to one side of the gate and the latch on the other. Screw the receivers for the latch to the post for the latch.

    • 4

Measure and cut a piece of welded wire to fit the size of the kennel gate. Nail the piece of wire to the frame with fencing nails.

    • 5

Screw the hinges on the gate to the gate post.
