How to Build a Dog Kennel With Pea Gravel

Create an area in your backyard where your dog can rest, play and be contained within a kennel. The average size for a single kennel is 5-by-10 feet, but can vary depending upon the size of your dog. Try to place the kennel in an area with plenty of shade, or add a doghouse so your dog will not be in direct sunlight.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an area in your back yard where you have enough room to set up the kennel. Measure out the space where the kennel will go, and mark it off using the wood stakes and string.

    • 2

Remove the grass and dirt located within the area marked off with the stakes and string. Dig down approximately 1 inch.

    • 3

To prevent the growth of weeds and grass through the pea gravel, cover the dirt with a black plastic covering. Use the stakes or large rocks to hold the corners of the plastic in place.

    • 4

Install chain-link fencing of desired height as instructed using the concrete mix to support the posts in place. The height of the fence will depend upon whether your dog can jump high.

    • 5

If the kennel is not in a shaded area and is taller than 6 feet, you may want to add a covering to protect your dog from the heat. The kennel can be covered with a plastic tarp or a wood or metal ceiling.

    • 6

Fill area with pea gravel. Place enough pea gravel in the kennel area to cover the black plastic cover and fill the area you have dug out.
