Instructions
Purchase a cheap standard size pillow. To bring costs down, try using a used pillow already infused with the pet's favorite person's scent.
Buy or scrounge up approximately 2 1/2 yards of fabric. Reuse an ill fitting sweater, well-loved T-shirt or an old fleece jacket for significant savings.
Cut the fabric into two pieces large enough to cover the pillow entirely, or fold a large piece of fabric in half for the same effect. For reused coats or shirts, cut one sleeve lengthwise for the bottom of the bed.
Use the remaining fabric to create the flap, which will need to be a couple inches larger on each side than the pillow cover. This extra space allows the dog to be comfortable but snug.
Pin then sew one short end of a pillow sized piece to the flap, with material facing in the same direction. Tucking will be needed to make the large piece fit.
Place the two pillow-sized pieces on top of another with any design or material facing toward each other. This will form an inside out cover, with the flap in the middle.
Secure the perimeter of the cover with pins on three sides. Leave the flap free on one of the longer sides, or where the fabric is folded and sewing not needed. Tuck the flap on the other long side, and one of the short sides as needed to make it fit.
Avoid pinning the short side where the flap is already sewed to one of the pillow cover pieces. Leave this completely open, because this is where the pillow will be inserted and removed for cleaning.
Sew around the pinned perimeter, avoiding the opening as well as the free hanging flap on one side. Remove pins, as needed.
Turn the case inside out. The completed project will resemble a pillow case with a big, floppy pocket on top.
Slide a pillow into the pillow cover. Attach Velcro tabs, if desired. Throw onto the floor, and watch as the dog sniffs then snuggles into its new burrow bed.
