How to Make a Retractable Leash

Retractable leashes give dogs additional freedom to move and explore while still allowing the walker to bring the dog closer and under control when necessary. Making a retractable leash at home is simple and requires only a few parts found at the local hardware store. You can put one together in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a utility cable spool from a hardware store that is small, lightweight and easy to carry on walks. It should hold a good length of cord on the spool. These spools come with cranks on the side that make winding the cord back up simple.

    • 2

Attach a length of nylon cord into the spool through the grommet that is provided to hold the cable or wire. The length of the cord depends on how much freedom you want to give the dog and the size of the utility spool.

    • 3

Attach a dog hook or a carabiner to the end of cord with a knot.

    • 4

Tie a small length of cord to the back or through the middle of the utility spool, depending on the design of the spool, to create a handle to hold the leash.
