The type of jacket you choose will depend on the function of your Yorkie's jacket.

Find an old sweater or jacket you don't wear anymore, or check out your local Goodwill or thrift store for recycled clothes. Use a jacket or sweater with a cuff, which will act as a ready-made collar. The cuff must have a bit of stretch to fit comfortably around your Yorkie's neck without being too tight.

Measure your Yorkie for a customized fit.

Measure your pooch's back beginning at the neck (between the shoulders) to the point where you want the jacket to end. Then measure the sleeve of the sweater or jacket, leaving an extra inch for the seam.

Angle your cut for your Yorkie's comfort.

Cut the sleeve at the desired length. For a longer jacket that stretches from neck to tail, cut the sleeve at an angle so not to interfere with your dog's back legs.

Hem cut edges to prevent fraying.

Cut two holes in the sleeve where your dog's front legs will be. Then fold the extra inch you left at the base of the sleeve under, and use a sewing machine to create a neat hem. Hem the arm holes, as well, to prevent fraying after extended wear.

Decorate your dog's new jacket with buttons, bows and iron-on letters, as desired.
