How to Build a Roll Cage for Coon Dogs

A coondog is a scent hound used for hunting. The name comes from the dog's original use in racoon, or "coon" hunting. Coondogs are excellent hunting dogs because they can be trained to hunt and track all types of animals, including ones that climb trees. The dog can hunt individually or in a group. Coondogs are sometimes kept in cages before being released for the hunt. Building a coondog cage can be done in less than a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase four rectangular stainless steel grates of the same size. The grates should be two feet by four feet.

    • 2

Connect the grates along the vertical line with plastic zip ties. Approximately 10 zip ties should be used for each connection. Assemble the grates in a three dimensional rectangle shape. This is the main part of the cage.

    • 3

Connect a two by two foot stainless steel grate to the end of the cage using plastic zip ties. Four ties should be used for each side. This is the back of the cage.

    • 4

Connect a two by two foot stainless steel grate to the front of the cage. Only connect one side of the grate to the cage. Use four plastic zip ties to make this connection. The connection should be made on either the right or left side of the cage. This is the door.

    • 5

Connect a steel clasp to cage and door on the opposite side of the plastic zip tie hinges. This is the lock. The cage is complete.
