Home Remedy for a Dog Peeing Inside

Whether you have just brought home a new puppy or have a dog that isn't quite housebroken, it can be frustrating to constantly be cleaning your floors due to dog accidents. Store-bought solutions for stopping a dog from urinating inside can be quite expensive, but home remedies to stop your dog from relieving himself in the house can be effective if you understand the cause of the problem.
  1. Significance

    • Dogs have a very strong sense of smell. If they urinate in one spot in the home, it is likely they will continue to go in that same spot over and over even if it has been cleaned up with strong chemicals. This is because the dog can still smell its urine and thinks of that spot as its territory. Removing this smell, along with continued training, is the best way to keep a dog from peeing inside.

    Methods

    • For hardwood or hard surfaces that have urine on them, rub Borax on it and let it sit until dry. For urine on a carpet, dab at the stain with a mix of one teaspoon of dish detergent and a cup of hot water. Dab a mixture of one part vinegar to two parts water on the vinegar to neutralize the odor. The smell of the vinegar is also extremely strong to the dog, but not to humans, discouraging further urination in that same spot.

    Potty Training

    • Young puppies and dogs who are not housebroken can be trained properly at home, the ultimate home remedy. While vinegar will discourage future urination and remove urine smells, the dog will still need to go to the bathroom. Bring the dog outside frequently, at least every two hours. When the dog does urinate where you want it to, give the dog plenty of praise, pet it and speak in a very excited and encouraging tone.

    Problems

    • Puppies do not have full control of their bladders when they are young and will not be able to hold their urine for long periods of time until they are at least 5 months old. If your dog cannot hold its urine and is no longer a small puppy, it may have a medical issue that requires veterinary attention.
